Man 'kicked in face'

A man was "kicked in the face several times'' in a brutal assault in Dunedin city on Thursday night, police say.

It was unclear what the victim was doing in Arthur St, but a taxi driver reported the incident via a 111 call about 10.55pm.

Senior Sergeant Brian Benn, of Dunedin, said the man was bleeding from his head and police were investigating.

"He [was] conscious but not in a good way [when police arrived],'' he said.

The victim then got aggressive towards people who were trying to help him and after he calmed down police followed the ambulance taking him to hospital, Snr Sgt Benn said.

A St John spokeswoman said the man was transported to Dunedin Hospital with moderate injuries.

She was unable to give specific information about the injuries.

Anyone with any information about the assault should contact Dunedin police on (03) 471-4800 or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555-111.

● A 46-year-old Dunedin man was arrested and charged with dangerous driving after a police pursuit in Middleton Rd on Thursday.

Snr Sgt Benn said the man was not the registered owner of the Toyota Hiace but it did not appear to be stolen.

The "short pursuit'', about 4.40pm, was low speed, Snr Sgt Benn said.

The man had been summonsed to appear in the Dunedin District Court.
