A man has been seriously hurt after being struck by steel, trapping him at a Dunedin construction site this morning.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said two fire appliances attended the incident in Filleul St, near Lincraft, at 11am.

He said the man may have been injured while unloading steel at the site.

An appliance from Dunedin Central arrived and freed the man, who suffered injuries to his pelvis, before a rescue appliance from Willowbank arrived, the spokesman said.

A St John spokesman said one patient was taken to Dunedin Hospital with serious injuries.
