The Very Rev Dr Trevor James officiates at the dedication of the Parata Chapel at St Paul’s Cathedral in Dunedin yesterday morning.

During the service, a side chapel in the  church was renamed in honour of Tame Parata and his wife, Peti Hurene.

Mr Parata was the MP for Southern Maori from 1885 to 1911 and was involved in establishing the Anglican Church in the Puketeraki, Karitane and Waikouaiti area.

The dedication also recognised his grandson, Hoani Parata,  the first Maori elected to the General Synod.

Dr James said it was unanimously agreed to name the chapel after the influential family.

"The name was decided a while ago now, but it took a while to work though."

The service began in Maori and a cross carved by a member of the extended family was placed in the chapel before it was blessed.
