A planned Museum of Broken Relationships exhibition in Dunedin has struck a chord, and 40 people have already offered to provide "an object that won't let you forget".

Donors had until 5pm yesterday to advise the Otago Museum online about the planned gift, and then have until November 8 to bring in the object concerned.

The subsequent Otago Museum show will run from December 21 to March 15, and has been jointly organised with the Museum of Broken Relationships, which operates in Croatia, and also in Los Angeles, in the United States.

Otago Museum marketing manager Hannah Molloy said 15 objects had already been brought to the Otago Museum, including a stone, a book, some creative writing and some garments, including a cheongsam, a close-fitting Chinese dress.

The museum had earlier invited potential donors to provide items linked to a relationship or its break-up, and to become part of "a global exhibition of loss and healing"

"Obviously people have responded really well," she said.

"As people walk through they go through a bit of a roller-coaster of emotions and experiences.

"I think people will be really interested to see it when it opens," she said.
