Going around in circles to raise funds for mural

Taieri College head boy Caleb Walker sure lives up to his name.

He is about to begin a 24-hour shift walking around the Wingatui Racecourse to raise money for a mural at his school and for the Cancer Society.

Caleb and his team of prefects will walk around the racecourse from 11am on September 6 to 11am on September 7 to raise money for a mural designed by year 13 student Gemma Lloyd, 17.

While students and members of the community could join the walk for however long they wanted to, Caleb was planning on walking around the track for the full 24 hours.

"I reckon I could do it.

"It’ll be a good challenge, but the reward will be massive."

The longest he had travelled by foot in the past was about 20km, but nothing near a time period of 24 hours.

He had not been training for the walk, but as a sportsman he believed he would be fit enough.

His plan of attack was to eat good food and stay motivated by the goal to raise $2500.

The idea came from Taieri head girl Bella MacKenzie, 18, whose brother had organised it a couple of years ago for another fundraising effort, Caleb said.

Any extra money raised would top up the school’s Shave for a Cure effort later in the year.

The mural would feature highlights from this year’s school year, including imagery from the school’s trip to Vietnam, its productions and academic success.
