Hamburg Sud New Zealand South Island manager Blair Hancock surveys a German war plane which will feature in the Warbirds over Wanaka International Airshow this Easter.

The Messerschmitt Bf109, a later model of the aircraft which featured in the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s and under the Germans in World War 2, was unloaded at Mainfreight Air and Ocean in Dunedin yesterday.

It arrived in Port Chalmers on Sunday after a month-long journey from London.

The Messerschmitt featured in the 1968 film Battle of Britain and the 2008 Tom Cruise movie Valkyrie.

It was built by Hispanio Aviacion in Seville in 1959.

Mainfreight Air and Ocean Dunedin branch manager Mark Willis said the plane would take part in a re-enactment of the Battle of Britain in aerial displays alongside its World War 2 nemesis, the Spitfire, in the airshow.

It would be transported to Wanaka later this week and shipped back to London after the show.

The aircraft was owned by Aircraft Restoration Company based in Duxford, England.
