Mr Butler (59), border collie Rapid (6) and kelpie Ella (12) set out from Christchurch on August 10 on a South Island walkabout to raise funds for the Cancer Society.
They arrived in Mosgiel at lunchtime yesterday on day 56 of their hike.
"I'm not feeling too bad, apart from the blisters," Mr Butler said.
Along the way they have visited Kaiapoi, Rangiora, Cheviot, Kaikoura, Blenheim, Nelson, Richmond, Motueka, Murchison, Westport, Punakaiki, Greymouth, Hokitika, Geraldine, Lake Tekapo, Twizel, Wanaka, Queenstown, Cromwell, Alexandra, Gore, Invercargill, Mataura, Clinton, Balclutha, Milton, Mosgiel and Dunedin.
Next are Oamaru, Waimate, Timaru and Ashburton, before they arrive back in Christchurch on October 17.
Mr Butler has been averaging 40km a day, which equates to 55,301 steps, and has a rest day every four days.
So far, Mr Butler and friends have walked 1925km, raising $17,000 for the Cancer Society.
"I've got about 400km to go."
He will visit the National Bank in South Dunedin at 8am today, the Octagon branch from 8.30am-9am and the Dunedin branch from 9.05am-9.35am.
