Mosgiel bus petition set to fail

A petition signed by 180 people seeking retention of the Mosgiel bus service stop beside a Cumberland St supermarket seems unlikely to achieve its aim.

Mosgiel resident Lynne Hill is concerned the planned bus stop change, linked to the new central bus hub, will make it harder for Mosgiel residents visiting Dunedin Hospital for medical appointments.

Mrs Hill said the bus to central Dunedin stopped near the Centre City New World supermarket in Cumberland St, which was near the hospital.

This direct access enabled her to use the 9am bus to keep a 10am hospital appointment.

However, this stop will no longer be used, and the route will switch to the planned central bus hub in Great King St, near the central police station, when the bus hub is established later this year.

This change effectively doubled the distance that passengers attending the hospital would have to walk, or they would have to wait for a connecting bus to the hospital.

Some people with disabilities would find it harder to walk from the hub, she said.

She presented the petition to the council in March.

Council staff have previously said the change would improve the overall bus service.

In a report prepared for a council finance and corporate committee meeting today, council corporate services director Nick Donnelly said staff had considered the matter further, after receiving the petition.

Staff still believed, that even with an extra bus transfer at the hub, ''access to the hospital is improved for all users''.

The report recommended the petition's proposal - to retain the bus stop when the hub was operational - be declined.

Under the current arrangement it was about a 270m walk from the bus stop to the Cumberland St entrance of the hospital and a 380m walk to the Great King St entrance, the report said.

Under the new arrangement, when Mosgiel passengers reached the hub, they would have a free transfer to the Balaclava-Logan Park (stadium) service, which would run every 15 minutes on weekdays, to reach a bus stop, to be placed in the hospital block of Great King St.

People wanting to walk from the hub would face longer distances: 420m to the Great King St entrance, and 500m to Cumberland St equivalent, the report said.
