Instead of thoroughbreds, it was runners caked in mud galloping around Wingatui Racecourse yesterday.

About 620 competitors, many dressed in colourful costumes, took part in the Mud, Sweat and Tears Challenge.

Mud pools, ponds and obstacles were placed at various points along the 5km track, which some found easier to navigate than others.

Even though they were out of breath and caked in mud, Taieri College pupils Poppy Kirk (14) and Briana Day (13 ) said they both would be back next year.

Both were unfazed by having to trudge through waist-high mud, but the part of the course where they had to crawl through a dark tunnel was not their favourite section.

``It's pretty scary crawling through the dark not knowing where you are going,'' Briana said.

Hot showers were available once the competitors had crossed the finish line.

Organiser Ben Patston said the event was an overwhelming success.

``It's been a great day: over 600 competitors, plenty of spectators and great weather ... Can't get much better than that.''
