Music man charges into the future

A Dunedin guitarist is rocking out at the Locky Dock to pedal New Zealand Music Month.

Sam Charlesworth, of the Beatniks and Loa Loa, is proving music can come from anywhere by plugging his amplifier into an electric bike charging stand, the Locky Dock, outside the University of Otago in Albany St.

Mr Charlesworth performed last Friday and is planning on performing today at 3pm and next Friday too.

He said it was cool to play to the public and seeing people react to his music as they walked past.

"It’s good to spread joy through music and give people something to spice up their day."

Mr Charlesworth came up with the idea with his father, who worked with Big Street Bikers, the company behind Locky Docks.

"When I was talking to my dad, we kind of got the idea because we were, like, ‘It’s New Zealand Music Month and we should do something for New Zealand Music Month’.

"We thought it would be a good idea to combine our two crafts, I guess."

Last Friday, people came by and joined in by either sitting around, dancing or picking up an instrument.

Mr Charlesworth was performing original songs that he began writing when he started playing music as a 15-year-old.

"I picked up my cousin’s guitar to see if I could do it — and I was just so bad that I couldn’t play anyone else’s songs, so I just found a couple of chords and then started making my own."

Mr Charlesworth’s music can be streamed from Spotify and YouTube.
