Online bidding was frenetic when hundreds of North American Indian treasures in a Dunedin showroom went under the digital hammer yesterday.

The 325 lots, including about 200 pieces of jewellery and figurines crafted by North American Indians and about 100 pieces of high European fashion, were auctioned online from the Hayward's Auction House in Dunedin yesterday.

The top price of $US14,000 ($NZ20,916) was paid by an online buyer for the pair of Zuni inlaid figurines pictured in yesterday's Otago Daily Times.

All but 38 of the lots sold in five hours of bidding, earning a cumulative total of about $NZ140,000 ($US93,726), Hay-ward's owner Kevin Hayward said.

The collection had been put together by one North American owner who moved to New Zealand before deciding to sell, Mr Hayward said.

The auction - held in the auction room, but carried live on the liveauctioneers.com and eBay websites - attracted 340 registered online buyers from around the world.

The bulk came from North America, but others logged on from Hong Kong, Malaysia, France, Spain, Australia, Britain, Denmark and Canada.

The item expected to fetch the day's top price - a Michael Price ring dagger made from sterling silver and walrus tusk - was among items that did not sell, Mr Hayward said.
