About 80 Royal New Zealand Navy officers and staff from HMNZS Otago renewed their Otago and Southland regional charter with a march around the Octagon on Saturday. Dunedin Mayor Dave Cull and Invercargill Mayor Tim Shadbolt were present.
The charter, originally presented in 2010, gives officers and crew freedom to march through the streets of Dunedin, Waitaki, Clutha, Central Otago, Queenstown Lakes, Invercargill, Southland and Gore with "drums beating, band playing, colours flying, bayonets fixed and swords drawn''.
