Dunedin's first Hindu temple is a place for anyone "looking for the secret to blissfulness", a preacher says.

The Shri Radha Shyamsunder Temple had an inauguration for its Queens Dr, St Kilda site last week, opening its doors to all.

Preacher Sankirtan Krishnadas said the space was for developing the mind as well as worship.

"There is no religious concept here.

"We are talking about the subject of beyond religion."

While driving for Uber part-time, he had found there were a lot of "mind-related issues" in the community.

"In today’s society, people are very frustrated, especially youth.

"Depression, anxiety, and overthinking are mind-related issues.

"There is no medical solution for this."

He said there was no solution in medicine other than tablets.

Mr Krishnadas planned to create a programme to help people who were frustrated — especially youth — find bliss.

He said while relationships with others and material things provided happiness and peace, they did not satisfy the soul.

Only a healthy relationship with the mind could provide bliss for the soul.

There were many techniques found in Hindu scripture that offered blissfulness including breathing and meditation that he would teach in the programme.
