No space to swing a ship

The Port Chalmers wharves were filled to the brim yesterday morning by cruise ships Celebrity Solstice (left) and Noordam and container ship CMA CGM Coral.

I-Site Dunedin visitor centre manager Louise van de Vlierd said together the cruise ships brought in almost 5000 passengers and were crewed by 2000 staff.

Both ships docked within an hour of each other yesterday morning, which initially led to long queues for the buses into town.

They quickly dissipated, Ms van de Vlierd said.

``It all went very smoothly.''

As well as the usual sights, passengers were treated to Waitangi Day celebrations in the Octagon.

Why not dredge the harbour so they can dock in Dunedin city instead? Maybe then we could have a terminal such as Sydney Harbour for cruise ships. And the bridge to nowhere would have users. Forward planning by the DCC/ORC/Harbour Board? will they make it happen- probably not...Afterall, they bring most of the tourists that Dunedin receives.
