Riley Honings (5) very nearly delivered a knock out blow for the Black Caps ahead of tomorrow's Cricket World Cup clash with Scotland.

The Dunedin boy was in the Octagon with family to chase autographs yesterday, when he took things a step further by asking Scotland players for a quick game of cricket.

The players happily obliged, lobbing a few balls in Riley's direction, but perhaps wished they had not after he connected with one delivery.

The strike sent the tennis ball whistling straight back into the midriff of Scotland's opening batsman, Calum MacLeod, who folded on impact but quickly recovered.

Riley's aunt, Rachel Gilchrist, said it appeared to strike the player ''in the belly button - or just slightly lower''.

MacLeod soldiered on, with no need for a physio, and Riley was out soon after - caught in the deep.

It appeared there were no hard feelings, either, as MacLeod joined Scotland captain Preston Mommsen and other players for a photograph with Riley.

Mrs Gilchrist said her nephew had only just been introduced to cricket, but had become ''quite obsessed'' in his hunt for autographs yesterday.

He ended up with 11 covering his bat, ball, T shirt and even his arms, which would be proudly displayed at school today, Mrs Gilchrist said.

''I'm pretty sure he's a fan now.''
