Dunedin's Octagon will be the venue this weekend for much of the annual Royal New Zealand Pipe Band Association's Octagonal Day competition.
Sixteen bands from around the South Island will compete, and with between 20 and 25 members each, a massed band march on George St, beginning at Frederick St tomorrow at 9am, should be impressive, Dunedin City Council events team leader Marilyn Anderson said.
The competition begins at 10am today, with a march from Great King St to the Octagon, and bands will be judged on their sets and medleys throughout the day.
Massed band events, beginning in the Octagon, will also be held after 4pm on both days.
