London St was closed yesterday morning in the first step of Dunedin’s central city rejuvenation.

The first stage of the project, which will eventually result in George St being turned into a one-way thoroughfare with more space given to pedestrians and active transportation modes, will focus on surrounding streets.

Work on London St and Filleul St will involve the installation of water and sewer pipes, and intersection upgrades.

Construction will stop in December to minimise disruption during the busy Christmas shopping period.
