Ongoing enjoyment of RSA

For more than 30 years Elvia Thompson has been a regular at the Mosgiel Memorial RSA.

Mrs Thompson worked at the RSA for 30 years, and since giving that up four years ago has found more and more ways to volunteer for the service organisation.

''I'm more involved now than I was when I worked here,'' she said, with a laugh.

''The only day I'm not here is Monday; every other day I'm here.''

The 71-year-old Mosgiel woman is president of the Otago Services Travel Club, sits on the Anzac Day committee, is organising the Children's Christmas Party and finds time to call housie on Tuesdays.

''You name it, I do it.''

Her reason for giving so much time and of herself to the organisation was simple: ''I enjoy doing it.

''And at the other end it's good to see people enjoying themselves.''

The enjoyment the RSA's members get from the activities she helped organise was reward enough, she said.

''A couple of years ago it snowed out here and I called the housie off,'' Mrs Thompson said.

''The next time we had housie, they all went mad at me because I called it off and I was the only one not here - everyone else showed up without me.''

The RSA provided a social hub for its members and they were like family, she said.

''A lady on her own can come in here and socialise, while a lady on her own won't go into a hotel and socialise,'' she said.

Once the ongoing renovation of the Mosgiel Memorial RSA was completed, she hoped more people would use the facility.

''I advise people out here that once the community club is up and going to come and use it, otherwise we will lose it,'' she said.

''That's my motto; use it or lose it.

''I know younger people find it harder to come into the RSA; they don't know a lot about the RSA. But there's only one way to find out; come and see.''
