Climber Julia Hodgson, 14, of Dunedin grips a crimp tightly while she competes in the under-15 category in round 1 of the NZAC National Indoor Bouldering Series at Resistance Climbing Gym in Dunedin yesterday.
Resistance owner Angus Kirk said the competition brought about 300 climbers from across New Zealand to Dunedin at the weekend.
He said bouldering was a faster "subgenre" of climbing.
Most bouldering climbs went up to about 5m and no ropes were required.

Climbers gained points by completing as many climbs as they could in two hours and the more difficult climbs received more points.
The sport was quite big in Europe and was rapidly growing in New Zealand.
The weekend’s open men’s winner, Oskar Wolff, began climbing 10 years ago and said the sport had taken him all over the globe.
