Around the world in 60 minutes - beat that Phileas Fogg.

While the Jules Verne character managed to travel around the world in 80 days, a small group of musicians from the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra gave a snapshot of music from countries across all continents in a little more than an hour yesterday.

They gave two school concerts for Dunedin pupils at the King's and Queen's Performing Arts Centre, taking them on a journey through the Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia and down under.

Performers demonstrated how different cultures and countries could be identified by their music.

On their musical journey around the globe, the NZSO visited Purakaunui, which was captured in music by Dunedin composer Anthony Ritchie.

The piece was commissioned by the NZSO and Dr Ritchie said it was inspired by his holidays there.

A similar concert was given on Tuesday night at the centre, for the general public.
