Otago cricket eyes winter training facility

The home base for the Carisbrook Cricket Club could host a covered winter training facility.

Tonga Park has emerged as the preferred site of the Otago Cricket Association for such a development.

Last year, the association told the Dunedin City Council it wanted to build a winter training site featuring a greenhouse at Tahuna Park, on Victoria Rd.

It would have 18 covered pitches, nearly all of them grass, which could be used by international cricketers when Dunedin hosts matches, as well as domestic players and the community.

The facility would allow training year-round.

Assessments were carried out at various sites and Tonga Park, South Dunedin, is now considered the most suitable.

The proposed facility would be owned, managed and maintained by the association and the Dunedin City Council would continue to own the land.

The facility would not be accessible to the public.

It is expected to help cricket players develop and would be used by national sides, international visiting teams and representative domestic teams.

There would be no capital or operational costs for the council.

Cricket practice nets next to the Queen’s High School boundary could be moved elsewhere within Tonga Park.

The park is used for football in winter.

It is the home ground of the Caversham Football Club.

The development, should it be granted resource consents, is not expected to affect winter sports fields much.
