When 4-year-old Finn Phillips met his new baby sister for the first time yesterday, he thought it was his best Christmas present yet.

His parents, Dunedin couple Sam Phillips and Kerry Michaels, welcomed their third child — a daughter — who was also the first baby born in Dunedin on Christmas Day.

"Baby Phillips", who is as yet unnamed, was born at 2.56am and weighed 3.19kg.

Her older brothers, Finn and 2-year-old Koa, were stoked to be big brothers.

Finn asked his parents "can we have another baby" for Christmas next year, before changing his mind and asking if his mum could have one ready for Halloween next year instead.

Mr Phillips told his son "this is not an every Christmas sort of thing".

Baby Phillips was due to arrive today, so a Christmas spent in the hospital was never out of the question.

However, the later it got on Christmas Eve, the more confident Ms Michaels was that they would get to spend Christmas still as a family of four.

"I felt totally normal, nothing was starting ... we were prepping food like potatoes for Christmas dinner."

She said the dinner "never happened", and instead they now had many leftovers for the coming days.

They had put carrots, cookies and milk out for Santa and put the boys in bed when Ms Michaels’ waters broke.

"Nothing happened for a few hours, so we still thought maybe we would be here for Christmas Day, but then she decided to come along very quickly.

"She must have really wanted to be a Christmas baby."

While Mr Phillips and Ms Michaels spent the rest of Christmas Day in the Queen Mary maternity ward, Koa and Finn left with their grandmother to hang out with friends, and to tell everyone all about their new baby sister.
