Owner of unleashed dog fined

A Dunedin dog owner has been fined and given a fencing order after an investigation into an attack in which a man was bitten.

A 50-year-old man was bitten on the neck and hand by an unleashed dog when he was walking a leashed dog in St Kilda on Sunday.

The man was walking a mixed breed in Hargest Cres, when a woman walked to her letterbox with her unleashed border collie-cross.

The collie rushed on to the footpath and a fight ensued on public land. The man was bitten when he tried to intervene.

Dunedin City Council environmental health and animal services manager Ros MacGill said after an investigation, the owner of the unleashed dog was fined $200 and ordered to fence the area near the letterbox.

The investigation had not determined which dog had bitten the man.
