Pair cross Leith to try to assault artists

Two allegedly intoxicated men swam through the Water of Leith in an attempt to assault two Dunedin artists.

Sergeant Matt Lee, of Dunedin, said police were called to the Leith Bridge in Cumberland St at 5.30pm yesterday after two contracted artists spraypainting a mural were assaulted by two men.

Two unknown, allegedly intoxicated and aggressive men approached the artists and swam through the Water of Leith to confront them.

When the intoxicated men reached the artists they punched the pair, however the artists came out better and took the pair to the ground and stopped the assault, Sgt Lee said.

The intoxicated men left the area before police arrived and investigations were ongoing to identify the men.
