Parking for longer than two hours at the central Dunedin Countdown could cost vehicle owners at least $45, as of yesterday.
Signs went up yesterday stating the new 24-hour seven-day-a-week parking policy was that cars parked for longer than the free 120-minute limit would be ticketed.
Car owners would have 21 days to pay, or be charged an extra $20.
Wilson Parking, which held the contract for car parking on the site, could also clamp cars, which would cost $80 to remove in addition to the $45 ticket.
Or the offending vehicle could be towed, again at the owner's cost, and on top of the infringement notice.
The $45 covered the cost of enforcing the conditions of parking and the cost of issuing the notice, a large sign at the supermarket entrance said.
A Progressive enterprises spokeswoman said towing was previously used to discourage non-shoppers from using the car park.
It was believed this system would protect the interests of legitimate shoppers and be less harsh on people who inadvertently parked for longer than the time allowed, she said.
