Pedestrian crossing decision delayed

Any decision on installing a pedestrian crossing in Factory Rd, Mosgiel, has been postponed until the new right-hand turn road rules are in place.

The crossing was discussed by the Mosgiel Taieri Community Board at a meeting yesterday where the issue of the effect on drivers was raised.

In 2010, the board flagged the idea of a pedestrian crossing near the Factory Rd-Church St intersection, but its installation was halted after some business owners were angered by the plan and lack of consultation.

Following a board request, council senior traffic engineer Ron Minnema assessed the site and concluded kerb protrusions were more appropriate than a crossing.

Two options were developed with board input and businesses were invited to comment.

Mr Minnema recommended installing two kerb protrusions in Factory Rd, to the west of Church St, and a splitter island in Church St, at the cost of $20,000.

The other option included installing an additional two kerb protrusions in Factory Rd, on the east side of Church St.

Concerns about how protrusions and changes to the right-hand turn rule would affect traffic were raised by board members.

The board agreed to suspend any decision until four weeks after the road rules changed on March 25.
