A persistent penguin interrupted traffic not once but twice in Dunedin yesterday.

A police spokeswoman said it received calls about a small penguin on Portsmouth Dr at 4.40pm.

Traffic was light at the time and the penguin was put back into the water, only to get back out a few minutes later.

The Department of Conservation sent someone to manage the penguin, the spokeswoman said.

Sue Cook, of Bird Rescue Dunedin, said they were called by the Doc to attend to the penguin.

She had the penguin in her care and was taking it to The Wildlife Hospital, Dunedin, today.
