A Dunedin man drove off without paying for petrol, failed to stop for an officer and then went immediately home where he was arrested, police say.

Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said the incident involving a 39-year-old man happened at the Z Station in Kaikorai Valley Rd about 9.30am yesterday.

Driving past in a marked car, police saw the man leave the petrol station. Although the officer did not know the man had just done the petrol drive-off, he recognised him, Snr Sgt Bond said.

The man was known to police and the officer attempted to stop him.

The driver failed to stop, Snr Sgt Bond said.

‘‘We didn’t pursue, but obviously had the registration plates and was able to identify the registered owner’s home address, which was nearby there."

When police arrived, the man was getting out of his car in the driveway.

He was arrested for failing to stop, breaching bail conditions and also been charged with the petrol drive-off, Snr Sgt Bond said.
