Liquid nitrogen with your ice cream, anyone?

Physicists from the University of Otago's Jack Dodd Centre for Photonics and Ultra Cold Atoms were cheerfully using the liquid nitrogen - at an initial temperature of -200degC - to whip up an ultra-fast ice cream recipe yesterday.

Cream, milk and berries were some of the other ingredients used to create the popular ice cream, which was devoured by members of the public as swiftly as it was produced, during a lively science expo organised by the university at the weekend.

A young computer scientist playing an electric guitar game and rooms filled with seven species of live amphibians and polar gear, including a tent used in Antarctic research, were among about 45 other attractions produced by about 20 university departments.

The expo was part of Dunedin's latest nine-day New Zealand International Science Festival, which also began on Saturday. More than 2200 people attended.
