Karekare artist Ann Robinson has an international reputation as a glass sculptor and will exhibit a comprehensive survey of her cast-glass bowls and vases in "Celebrating the Recession".
Robinson studied glass-blowing and bronze casting at Auckland University in 1980, before developing new techniques in glass art after she established glass-blowing co-operative Sunbeam Glass Works in Auckland in 1981, with glass artists Garry Nash and John Croucher.
"Glass is an expressive material, capable of beauty and subtle nuances of mood," she says.
"To me, working on a piece is an act of love: the more effort that you put in the more that comes shining back out."
Much of her work is inspired by the colours and shapes of New Zealand flora and fauna.
Robinson was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) in 2001 and awarded the American Glass Society's Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2006.
"Celebrating the Recession" opens at 5.30pm on Saturday and runs until December 14 at Milford Galleries, in Dowling St.
Robinson will attend the opening and hold a talk at 11:30am on Saturday in the gallery.
