About 20 Dunedin Palestinian supporters have made a trip to Auckland to support a nationwide protest to push the government to impose sanctions on Israel.

The activists were intending on joining a "March for Humanity" that would block the southbound lane of the Harbour Bridge this morning.

However, a drastic change in weather forecast predicting unsafe wind speeds on the Auckland Harbour Bridge forced a change in course.

The protesters would now assemble at Auckland’s Aotea Square and march through the CBD to Victoria Park.

Dunedin Justice for Palestine organiser Rinad Tamimi said the Dunedin cohort was going to join thousands of New Zealanders in Auckland to "stand up for justice and humanity".

"Palestinians matter and what is happening in Palestine must stop.

"Our government needs to put sanctions on Israel."

Going to Auckland and taking time out of her regular life was nothing compared to what her people were going through in her homeland, she said.

"I want my daughter to grow up and look back at which side of history I brought her up on — the side of humanity, as my mother did for me. I also want to be with others who share our values of humanity, and make New Zealand history together this weekend."

The Dunedin contingent included Palestinian-Kiwis, Israeli-Kiwis and Jewish-Kiwis.

Israeli and Jewish Kiwi Rod Pik, of Dunedin, is making the trip with his wife and son, to stand in solidarity with Palestinians.

He said they moved to New Zealand about eight years ago and found it horrible watching what was happening from afar.

The March for Humanity in Auckland was inspired by a march across the Sydney Harbour Bridge in Australia.
