Royal New Zealand Pipe Bands Association Otago Centre president and adjudicator Brian Coutts said the weather was perfect for pipe-banding in Dunedin, which contributed to some very high-quality playing - particularly in the Grade 4 section of the contest.
''Preferably, we like it when the [weather] conditions stay the same.
''If it doesn't, the change in temperature affects the tuning of the pipes and drums.''
The provincial contest brought to an end a weekend of pipe-banding competition and entertainment in the city, which began on Saturday with the Octagonal Day Contest.
The events drew large crowds to the Octagon to watch 15 pipe bands being put through their paces in street marching, dress, drill, medley and set competitions.
Mr Coutts said there were more than 300 musicians in the city for the events from bands as far away as Christchurch, Invercargill and Queenstown.
