A Waitati farm took a further step towards returning to an undeveloped state on Saturday, when about 25 volunteers spent the day planting native trees.

The property, just below the summit of Mt Cargill, was bought by Canadian environmentalists Dorothy and Lloyd Morris in 1967.

In subsequent years the couple bought several adjacent properties, and devoted their lives to regenerating the native bush which once stood there.

The land is now administered by the Initial Volco Trust, which oversees about 20ha of native cloud forest and other areas of regenerating forest on the Waitati side of the summit.

Saturday’s event was both a chance to add to the extent of flora growing on the hillside, and also to showcase the trust’s work.
