Otago has been warned to prepare for snow to "near sea-level" as a strong southerly sweeps up the South Island.
Forecasters say very cold, showery conditions will develop in Otago, Southland and Fiordland tomorrow with snow to near sea-level by Tuesday morning.
The MetService says it is unlikely the snow will accumulate for long below 500m but combined with strong winds and cold showers will produce "significant wind chill".
The snow showers are expected to clear from central Otago by Tuesday evening and elsewhere overnight on Tuesday or during Wednesday morning.
Widespread frosts are likely in central Otago on Wednesday morning and over most of the South Island on Wednesday night and Thursday morning.
People in the south and east of the South Island are advised to keep up to date with the latest forecasts and prepare for these adverse conditions.
