More than 1000 people basked in the fragrant fields of Dunedin’s inaugural lavender festival over the weekend.

It was held at Lavender Row farm, near Outram, which is the only lavender farm in the surrounding Dunedin area.

Lavender Row owner and festival organiser Paula Cosgrove said the festival was a chance to see how a lavender farm operated, learn more about essential oils and bask in the beauty of lavender.

It also featured live music, a playground, scavenger hunt and an essential oil distillation demonstration.

She had received good feedback and people had enjoyed themselves, Ms Cosgrove said.

"I was wanting to build a really sound foundation for growing [the festival] in the future, and I think we've achieved that."

A lot of hard work had gone into the festival and there was "huge potential" for it to grow in subsequent years.

She estimated more than 1000 people had visited her farm over the weekend.

The 18ha farm grows five different varieties of lavender — grosso, Pacific blue, violet intrigue, munstead and hidcote blue.

"Lavender is one of those things that everybody kind of knows about, and a lot of people have it in their gardens.

"But to actually see it on this scale is something quite different."

Making people aware of the farm had been a bit of a challenge, she said.

Many had not realised there was a lavender farm near Dunedin, until discovering the festival through social media.

There had been lot of smiles on people’s faces as they were leaving, Ms Cosgrove said.

"We've still got quite a way to go, but I think this gave us quite good exposure.

"Hopefully it'll just grow from there."
