One person was transported to hospital with moderate injuries after a car left the road and rolled on to its side in Dunedin yesterday.

A police spokesman said emergency services responded to reports of a single vehicle crash at the intersection of Clava St and North Rd, at 5.45am.

The road was blocked for a time while emergency services attended and reopened by 7am, the spokesman said.

A Hato Hone St John spokeswoman said they responded with one ambulance and one first response unit.

Crews assessed and treated one patient who was transported to Dunedin Hospital in a moderate condition, the spokeswoman said.

Meanwhile, a car had to be towed from Otago Harbour after it too left a road.

A police spokesman said they received a report that a car had left Portobello Rd and ended up in the water towards the peninsula, at 12.50am yesterday.

The sole occupant did not sustain any injuries and one lane of the road was blocked for a time as the vehicle was towed from the harbour.

The car had went down a bank and ended up "slightly" in the water, the spokesman said.

"Not a sort of action movie-style fly off a bridge into the water, but came off the road nonetheless and ended up half in the water."
