Members of Dunedin’s Syrian community come together to formally celebrate the downfall of the country’s dictator, Bashar al-Assad, in the Octagon on Saturday.

About 150 people gathered to celebrate the ousting of the brutal regime with music, dancing and food.

The Syrian flag could be seen on cars, T-shirts and painted on children’s faces, and members of the community offered trays of treats to passing motorists.

After 13 years of civil war and five decades of the al-Assad family’s autocratic rule, Syrian rebels seized the capital Damascus last Sunday unopposed in a rapid advance, causing Assad to flee to Russia.

That evening, a group of about 30 men were seen celebrating in John Wilson Ocean Dr — including one person reportedly doing a burnout. They were later seen driving down Cumberland St in a convoy, waving flags and honking their horns.
