Senior Constable Tim Coudret carries out a spot check in Crawford St, central Dunedin, yesterday.

Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond said the checkpoint resulted in 20 infringement notices being issued to drivers between 8.30am and 9.30am.

All tickets were for not wearing seatbelts or cellphone use while driving.

He said a concerning number of tradespeople were ticketed.

The high number of violations of well-known rules was disappointing.

Police in the Otago coastal region would continue to be out and about trying to catch people flouting the law, Snr Sgt Bond said.

Comments

With the "disappointed" comment I can only say the the police are damn naive.
Every 6th car is on their phone
every 4th women
& every 3rd tradie.

The fines are a joke here in NZ. Be like the Aussies. In UK it is a $500 fine & if you are a new licence holder less than 2 years, you have to re sit your test.

The road toll is not a joke.

For reference, the penalty for using a hand-held mobile phone while driving in NZ is $150 and 20 demerit points.

Been nearly hit quite a few times by drivers checking their phones driving down Hillside Rd. You can see the stupid look on their faces as they look up to quickly correct which lane they are in.
Need more police on roads
