Dunedin policeman Inspector Andrew Burns will stay on in Tonga despite the change at the top in the Tongan police force.
It was announced this week former Dunedin detective Chris Kelley's contract as Tongan commissioner of police, a position jointly funded by Australia, New Zealand and Tonga, would not be renewed by the Tongan Government. Mr Kelley, who has faced criticism about the reforms he was employed to put in place, is to make a statement next week.
Insp Burns left Dunedin in June to take up a 12-month secondment with NZ Police, to Tonga.
NZ Police special programmes manager Insp Roly Williams, of Wellington, confirmed yesterday the project Insp Burns was working on would continue and there was no change to his role as a senior adviser to the Tongan police.
