Police support wider ban

Extending the Dunedin permanent liquor ban to cover the North Dunedin student area would be welcomed by Dunedin police, as they would be pleased with any measure that reduced alcohol related-harm, the city's police commander said yesterday.

The Dunedin City Council this week agreed to consult the public on a proposal to extend the permanent liquor ban in place in the city centre to the North Dunedin student area.

Police are responsible for policing breaches of the ban and Dunedin-Clutha area commander Inspector Greg Sparrow said yesterday any extension of the ban would not be used specifically to target events like the Hyde St keg party.

Liquor bans were another tool available to police to keep communities safer and promote responsible drinking behaviour, he said.

"An important point for any events held anywhere in the city is that they are managed responsibly in a safe environment ... We all have a responsibility to make sure that happens, not just police"
