Two eggs, or a bowl of semolina for breakfast, and pasta and cabbage, or barley soup with traces of potatoes, carrots, or a frankfurter, for lunch and dinner.

This diet, worth just $11.24 in total, was what Dunedin North Anglican Parish priest assistant Ivica Gregurec had to look forward for five days this week.

Mr Gregurec is one of many Dunedinites participating in the ''Live Below The Line Challenge''.

The challenge has Mr Gregurec living on just $2.25 a day for meals. The small sum is the equivalent to the international extreme poverty line, and allows for 75c to be spent on each meal. Participants are challenged to spend no more than 75c per meal for two weeks.

Supplementing the food with donations from friends or items grown in a home garden was forbidden by the challenge rules.

The challenge is aimed at giving participants a glimpse into the lives of people living in poverty around the world and raising money for charity.

''In the long run, it's really raising awareness of global poverty,'' Mr Gregurec said. When spoken to on Monday, the first day of the challenge, he was already feeling very hungry and said it had been a struggle not to have any tea or coffee.

The challenge meant a big cut to Mr Gregurec's diet.

''Very often, $11.20 would be one meal. If you go out, a meal costing $12 is considered cheap,'' he said.

As of Tuesday, he had raised more than $800 of his $1000 goal, which will go

to the Christian World Service.

Nationwide the challenge had raised more than $211, 000 to go towards various charities.
