Power has been restored to most of Green Island after a truck crash brought down powerlines this afternoon.
Aurora Energy is stating that power remains out to a hand-full of properties after the outage earlier affected hundreds of homes and businesses in the area.
The downed power pole was lying across the truck and rubble and debris was scattered on its path, along with a smashed give way sign.
Senior firefighter Michael Taylor said Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) responded to a truck colliding with a power pole about 3pm.
There were no reports of injury but Main South Road closed near Carnforth Street while emergency services responded.
The truck had hit one of the major power lines and brought it down on top of the vehicle.
Initially, FENZ advised the driver to remain inside the cabin for safety.
Delta responded quickly to isolate the power and the clean-up operation had begun from there, he said.
"If you’re involved in an accident where power lines are involved, best practise if you can and it’s safe to do so is to stay in the car or truck until power has been isolated to avoid the risk of electric shock.
"Many power lines had come down and were strayed across the road."
A fire truck and a police car blocked off the intersection of Main South Rd and Quarry Rd.
Motorists were advised to expect delays and asked to avoid the area.
Aurora Energy reported 1169 customers were affected throughout the afternoon.
Moyle's Supermarket managed to reopen earlier than expected after a generator was brought in.
