Pressure on pumps

Dunedin City Council stormwater pumps are showing the stress of operating non-stop for more than 48-hours.

Many pumps were exhibiting signs of "excessive wear" as they coped with the intensive rainfall, Dunedin City Council water and waste services manager John Mackie said.

Staff were nursing pumps in Green Island, Mosgiel and Sawyers Bay but these were still coping, he said.

"We're putting Band-Aids on and scheduling more maintenance."

The sewage problems experienced by some homeowners yesterday were being dealt with and no new incidents had been reported, he said.

A conserve water notice for the West Taieri Rural Water Scheme was lifted yesterday as the intake was cleared and the reservoir filled.

Otago Polytechnic Manaaki Student Centre in Harbour Tce was operating as usual yesterday after closing on Tuesday due to sewage problems.

The Dowling St-based Community College Dunedin operated normally yesterday, albeit with some leaks in the ceiling and a stairwell, after closing an hour early on Tuesday because of earlier leaks resulting from the wet weather, college officialssaid.

Some roads around the city were closed yesterday due to flooding.

These included Henley Rd, Taieri; Garthmyl Rd from Middlemarch to Mt Ross Rd; George King Memorial Dr from Whare Creek to Lee Stream; and all roads with fords for river or stream crossings.
