A cruise ship with a colourful past slid into Port Chalmers yesterday as Dunedin's cruise season ramps up.

Norwegian Jewel passes Acheron Point on its first visit to the city. It had been to Fiordland and was heading to Akaroa.

The ship is one of 10 expected between yesterday and next Friday, as a bumper season of 91 ships carrying about 190,000 passengers hits a busy three-month period.

The 10 vessels alone will bring about 19,000 passengers.

Norwegian Jewel was launched in 2005, when now United States First Lady Melania Trump swung the Champagne bottle to send it on its way.

The ship featured in an episode of comedy-drama Transparent.
