Requests from pupils for a rainbow pride flag to be flown at a Dunedin high school caused confusion last weekend and led to a petition which was apparently never needed.
The petition, created on Saturday, said pupils of Logan Park High School were denied a request for a pride flag to be displayed on school grounds during pride month because it would not be fair to straight pupils.
More than 650 people had signed the petition.
Co-principal Kristan Mouat was surprised to hear of the petition.
She said there must have been some confusion as the student council was told on Friday the school would fly the flag.
It did not look like the creator of the petition was a pupil of the school, she said.
‘‘We’re absolutely proud to be supportive of our pride students and pride community.’’
The school had not flown a flag for 30 years and the staff had to check whether the flag pole still worked. It might take longer than pupils wanted, but had been approved, she said.
The petition’s creator did not respond for comment.
