Proctor defends Hyde St students

University of Otago proctor Simon Thompson has defended the actions of Hyde St residents, who dressed their flats in themes such as Jews and a bloodied crime scene, for Saturday's party.

The annual event saw about 500 people, many of whom were dressed in theme, congregate on the street for a keg race.

Nine people were arrested during the event.

A university spokeswoman said no students were referred to the proctor.

An upset member of the public contacted the Otago Daily Times yesterday concerned with photos which showed a flat with swastikas painted on top of the star of David.

It was a bad look for Dunedin and for the University of Otago, the woman said.

However, Mr Thompson said, in an email reply to the woman which was forwarded to the paper, that the occupants of the flat who had dressed their house in the Jewish theme had not painted the swastikas and, in fact, had tried to cover them up.

"They were disappointed and angry that this graffiti had appeared and were in no way responsible for it."

Mr Thompson said "local criminals" seen in the area may have been responsible for the swastikas.

The flat's occupants had been supplied with paint by Campus Watch to cover the swastikas.
