Progress on living wage plan

The first steps towards establishing a living wage movement in Dunedin have been made, with several organisations in the city working towards creating a steering committee.

Following the community meeting held at Dunedin North Intermediate last week, Unions Otago convener Fiona Matapo said the organisation was interested in being part of a wider community group that would promote the living wage movement within Dunedin.

Mrs Matapo said she was in discussions with several community organisations with a view to establishing a small working party to take the next steps and start framing a wider plan.

It was hoped representatives from Dunedin's churches, unions, education organisations, parenting organisations and the disability sector would support the drive to establish a living wage of $18.40 an hour to help Dunedin residents meet their needs, enjoy their lives and participate in society.

Service and Food Workers' Union communications director Lyndy McIntyre had given inspiration to those supporting the establishment of a living wage movement in Dunedin by providing examples of how the campaign had been adopted in other parts of the country.
