The Otago SPCA is concerned a puppy stolen from its shelter has fallen into undesirable hands.

A female bull terrier cross puppy went missing on Saturday during open hours and was last seen between 11.30am and noon, manager and chief inspector Steph Saunders said.

"You have to wonder about the morals of someone who would steal an animal from anyone, let alone from a charity in broad daylight," she said.

She did not know if it had been stolen for dog fighting, but believed there was a growing trend in the city of owning pit bulls.

Animals stolen from the shelter generally resurfaced, and she hoped the puppy, known as Nee-hi, would do the same.

"We will accept her back, no questions asked."

Puppies and dogs cost $200 to adopt from the shelter.
