Rail crossing improvements delayed

Improvements to a rail crossing in central Dunedin have been delayed and parts of the project have had to be redesigned.

The St Andrew St level crossing was on reclaimed land and this was posing some design challenges, KiwiRail South Island operations general manager Mark Heissenbuttel said.

There had also been problems with historical contamination from fuel silos, and from previous rail activities.

"We are working closely with the Dunedin City Council to bring the project to a successful conclusion.’’

An upgrade of the St Andrew St car park could be complemented by a 3m-wide cycleway and gate barriers to protect pedestrians and cyclists.

The project had been due for completion in April, but city council transport group manager Jeanine Benson said work was now expected to be finished by the end of the year.

Work on the crossing improvements was taking more time than expected, as council staff and contractors worked with KiwiRail and other parties to redesign parts of the project, she said.

There had also been delays in sourcing materials.
