Ratepayer association splinters

A ratepayers group in Dunedin appears to have fractured just months after it was revived.

The Dunedin Ratepayers and Householders’ Association became an incorporated society last week and a new committee set up, city business owner Sue Todd said.

"Irreconcilable differences" had developed within the previous committee of 11 and six members were pursuing a new course, Mrs Todd said.

The incorporated society, confirmed in documentation, was signed by 16 people, including Mrs Todd.

Another signatory, John Kirby, was chairing the society, she said.

Missing from the list of signatures was that of Lyndon Weggery, who was voted in as chairman in June of the reborn Dunedin Ratepayers and Householders Association.

Mr Weggery, contacted by the Otago Daily Times yesterday, was apparently oblivious to having been sidelined, if this was what had occurred.

"It seems very bizarre," Mr Weggery said.

He said he wanted to make inquiries before offering meaningful comment.

Mrs Todd said a meeting of the association on November 24 did not go well and Mr Weggery must have known repercussions would follow.

Dunedin has had a checkered recent history with ratepayer associations.

The Dunedin Ratepayers and Householders Association was led for many years by Syd Adie, who stood down in 2009, and Mr Weggery was chairman when the group was wound down in 2013.

It re-emerged this year after another group, the Dunedin Area Residents’ Association, formed and then lost its way.

The residents’ association has been removed from the incorporated societies register.

The re-formed ratepayers and householders’ group ran a series of meet-the-candidate events before this year’s local body elections.

Mrs Todd was reluctant to get into detail about what was perceived to have gone wrong since.

The new group intended to do such things as facilitating meetings to enable ratepayers to "get to know the people who are running the city".

Mrs Todd said election of committee members could be held early next year.
